Danish pharmaceutical ingredients supplier Novo Nordisk Pharmatech is investing DKK1.5bn ($221m) in building a new manufacturing facility at Ådalen 16 in the Town of Køge, Denmark.

The company said that the investment will address the significant demand for raw materials from Novo Nordisk, for the production of medicines to treat chronic diseases.

In March last year, Novo Nordisk Pharmatech purchased a 47,000 m² site in Køge, to expand the current production at Københavnsvej 216 in Køge.

The company established office facilities and construction work at Ådalen, earlier this year.

Covering around 8,000m² of area, the new factory is expected to contain production and storage facilities, an office, and a laboratory on the site.

The new facility is expected to begin production in 2027, creating around 50 new jobs.

Novo Nordisk Pharmatech CEO Ulla Grove Krogsgaard Thomsen said: “This is the largest investment in Novo Nordisk Pharmatech’s 75-year history. We are in a period of growth.

In accordance with our growth strategy, we are expanding our production to ensure an even more robust and reliable delivery of our products.

“The location in Køge is ideal, as we can draw on the extensive know-how we have at our current factory and furthermore, the infrastructure is optimal, with Køge Nord station so close to our new site.”

Through this project, Novo Nordisk Pharmatech focuses on both capacity and sustainability.

Based on experiences from the current production at Københavnsvej, the company is reusing important elements for production and to reduce CO2 footprint by around 60%.

Novo Nordisk Pharmatech plans to install solar panels in the parking area and construct the building using sustainable materials.

The project area facilitates expansions to support its future strategy of launching new products for the global pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries, said the Danish company.

Novo Nordisk Pharmatech project director Andreas Kyhn Brejnholt said: “In the building design, we have placed great emphasis on it blending into the natural area by Ådalen, and have, among other things, decided to construct the office building using wood. This results in CO2 savings and is more sustainable.”
