Miami International Airport (MIA), located on 3,230 acres of land near downtown Miami, Florida, US, is operated by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department and is the property of Miami-Dade County government.

Founded in 1928, MIA now offers more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other US airport, is the top US airport for international freight, is the third-busiest airport in the US for international passengers, and boasts a lineup of over 100 air carriers. MIA is also the leading economic engine for Miami-Dade County and the state of Florida, generating business revenue of $33.7 billion annually and welcoming 70% of all international visitors to Florida. MIA’s vision is to grow from a recognised hemispheric hub to a global airport of choice that offers customers a world-class experience and an expanded route network with direct passenger and cargo access to all world regions.

Premier hub for transporting temperature-controlled pharma

In 2015, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) designated MIA as the 1st Pharma Hub Airport in the US (and 2nd in the world) for engaging its local cargo community in the IATA Center of Excellence for Independent Validators in Pharmaceutical Logistics (CEIV Pharma) Programme. CEIV Pharma prepares logistics companies to become experts at properly handling temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products and to reduce the risk of temperature excursions, which can lead to product loss and increased cost. The certification is looked upon very favourably by pharmaceutical shippers (manufacturers) who want their pharma shipments to be handled with the highest standards. As a longstanding perishables powerhouse, MIA also has unparalleled infrastructure in the hemisphere for storing cold chain pharma – 451,885ft2 or 41,981m2 of on-airport refrigerated facilities.

Largest CEIV Pharma Airport Community in the western hemisphere

In 2017, four MIA Pharma Hub partners became CEIV Pharma-certified and two additional members of MIA’s cargo community also were certified, making a total of six companies – more than any other airport in the western hemisphere.

Excellent access to markets around the world through an extensive direct air route network

MIA is the premier gateway to the Latin American and Caribbean Region with 1,279 non-stop weekly departures to 79 destinations in the region. MIA also has direct air service to 25 cities in Europe and the Middle East.

Bridging pharma airport communities around the world

MIA, together with Brussels Airport (the 1st IATA-Designated Pharma Hub Airport in the world), founded Pharma.Aero in 2016. This collaborative association, made up of airport communities, pharma shippers and other logistics companies, works towards achieving reliable end-to-end transport for pharmaceutical cargo by air. It is a platform for building and strengthening pharma trade lanes around the world and is based on a foundation of CEIV Pharma Certification. In just over a year, membership has grown from seven to 23, including three strategic members representing major pharma shippers Johnson & Johnson, MSD and Pfizer.
